Student Legal Writers’ Association (SLWA)

Purpose:

SLWA of Saint Louis University School of Law serves two purposes: 1) It serves as a student writers' forum aimed at strengthening non-class, legal writing projects through peer-edits and guest-faculty feedback. Special attention is given toward polishing writing projects for competitions, journal articles, job prospects, etc. 2) It sponsors various programming geared toward developing student legal scholarship, research, and writing.

Member Requirements:

Membership is open to all current SLU law students. Please note that at least a semester commitment is required along with actively attending meetings (approx. 3x per semester) and working on a writing project or programming project.

Projects Eligibility:

Members can work on different writing projects within the group. However, there are a few guidelines:

  1. If the writing assignment is a current, un-graded class assignment, member must secure permission from their professor allowing the paper to receive feedback within our group.
  2. If the writing project is for a journal or competition, student will be responsible for following the guidelines and restrictions articulated in their rules.

Programming:

SLWA Members will host several programs throughout the year open to all SLU law students, including specialized programs concerning research, writing, guest faculty and student presentations, etc.

Annual Law Student Symposium:

SLWA is excited to host one of the few law-student only symposiums annually in April. For consideration, second and third year law students from SLU, WashU, UM-Columbia, UM-KC, SIU-Carbondale are invited to submit their papers by February 15th in a blind review. One paper will receive special honors including a $500.00 award. For further submission guidelines: click here.

Future Projects/Goals:

Pending interest, people-power and approval, SLWA has several projects in the works:

  1. Student Law BLOG;
  2. Law Student E-Journal in conjunction with Annual Symposium;
  3. SLWA moving to a student-governing body.
