Clinical Experience
Leaning heavily on the Ignatian philosophy of "men and women for others," Saint Louis University School of Law has always believed that work in the local community is an important component of legal education. From the moment students walk through the door on their first day of classes, to the time they walk across the stage at hooding, they become aware of the unique opportunities they have to make a difference in the lives of others.
Whether through externships, judicial clerkships or in-house clinical work, students are given vast opportunities for practical experience. Depending upon the type of clinical experience, students may be supervised by judges, attorneys and other legal professionals, as well as full-time faculty who have expertise in public interest law, family law, criminal law, immigration law, elder law and housing law.
In addition to the numerous clinical opportunities available, the School of Law encourages students to become involved in public service volunteer activities. The School provides students with a variety of opportunities to serve the community through public service agencies, special events and projects and student organizations. Involvement in service-oriented programs also provides those considering a career in Public Interest with a considerable amount of exposure to the field. Regardless of the type of involvement a student has with the Legal Clinics, the commitment to serving others remains strong.
Through service comes experience, and through experience comes a deeper understanding of the law and, most importantly, of people. Students learn about the people in their community – their needs, feelings and the ways in which their lives can be forever changed by the work and the dedication of students at Saint Louis University School of Law.
