Study in Cork, Ireland

Saint Louis University law students can have the richly rewarding experience of studying law in a country full of heritage and pride - Ireland. Students may arrange to study for one semester at University College Cork in Ireland through a cooperative agreement between the School of Law and the Faculty of Law of University College Cork. Founded in 1845, Cork's Faculty of Law includes 17 full-time faculty members who have practice qualifications, active research records and strong commitments to teaching and scholarship. Their areas of expertise include the traditional substantive subjects in Irish and European Union law, as well as several specialty areas including health law. Students who successfully complete courses at University College Cork under this program receive credit toward their J.D. degrees. Coordinated by the Center for International and Comparative Law, this program is open only to current students of Saint Louis University School of Law. To offset travel expenses, there is a small scholarship granted to each student participating in the exchange program. Applications are collected and reviwed during the spring semester for the subsequent fall semester.

Cork City is located in the southern Republic of Ireland near the head of Cork Harbor, an inlet of the Atlantic Ocean. The city dates from a religious settlement founded in AD 622 by Saint Finbar. Occupied by the Danes in the 9th century and by Oliver Cromwell in 1649, Cork is now the second largest city in Ireland with a population of 136,344. Cork is an important distribution center of agricultural products including cattle. The industrial sector includes chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturing. Cork is a center for Irish culture and music.
