SBA Meeting MINUTES
February 19, 2008

  • Welcome-- Annie opened the meeting.
  • Spring Exam Schedule Available – Annie announced the Spring Exam Schedule is now available. Feb. 22 is the last day to submit Blue Book, Self-Scheduling, and Exam Conflict Forms.  According to Dean Rollins, the decision-making power lies with the students until Feb. 22. If there are conflicts, students cannot take the exams early, but can take them later. Students should meet with Dean Rollins for special conflicts. The cut-off rule for conflicts is if the exams start within twenty-three consecutive hours of each other. Lauren noted that there have been some proposed changes to the twenty-three hour rule that were brought up at the Deans’ Forum last semester. Dean Rollins commented that the self-scheduled exams are a work in progress.
  • Sign-Ups for Regalia Days: February 18-22- Annie reminded 3L’s of Regalia Week. This is a week to get measured for graduation gowns, get pictures taken and so on. • End of Finals Party- Rob tentatively is planning to have an End of Finals Party on May 14.
  • Responsibilities to Students- Paul discussed the needs of the Law School community in light of the recent events in Illinois. Paul encouraged SBA reps to bear in mind fellow students who might be having a difficult time and be cognizant of their needs. Dean Rollins gave her number to students and said she will be available in case of emergencies and true student concerns. Lauren reminded students that Father Reale, SJ, is available for all students, whether Catholic or not, for concerns and students should feel comfortable going to him.
  • ABA Leadership Positions- Lauren announced that if students are members of the ABA Law Student Division then students can apply for Leadership Positions. Students can nominate themselves for the positions or have other students nominate them. The benefit of doing this is networking and an opportunity for leadership within the ABA.
  • Volleyball Tournament- Friday, April 18- Lauren announced that Eric Erdmann and Prof. Sloss have been working to set up this tournament. Sign-ups will be similar to softball. Students should sign-up as a team. The paperwork will be given out at the next SBA Meeting. If there are individuals who want to sign-up, but do not have a team, there are instructions to e-mail Eric or Lauren. The event will be free and there will be a social aspect to it. All of the information will go out in the next couple of weeks. The number of teams will depend on the number of people who sign-up.
  • Blood Drive, March 27- Lauren noted that this will be the first Thursday after Spring Break. There will be a sign-up sheet available at the next meeting. Students are encouraged to come to help the needs of the St. Louis Community.
  • SGA Senator Report, Lisa provided a report from the SGA:
    • SGA Elections, Monday, February 25- Lisa noted that this coming Monday is important, because it is the SGA election. Lisa noted that there will be a referendum for a smoke-free campus. There is a debate tonight in the Bush Student Center at 7 p.m. The referendum is not policy implementation, but will be to see how many people are interested. Law Students will be able to vote online and they can elect the SGA E-Board. There is also a proposal for increased student activities fees on the ballot for undergraduates. Law students will not be affected.
    • Password Adjustments: Lisa noted that there will be a password change. Dean Rollins noted that the Law School will control its own IT information and set its own dates.
  • Complaint about Newspapers- If there are any newspaper concerns, students should bring their newspaper concerns to Lisa.
  • New Student Organization Funding- Paul noted that after the Budget passed last week, the Jewish Lawyers Association received official status as a Student Organization. Billy Hoffman stated that the purpose of this association is to get Jewish law students in SLU active within the St. Louis legal community. Paul moved to give $200 to the Association. There was a brief period of discussion and the proposal was passed.
  • Number of Self-Scheduled Exams- Laura Keck began this discussion, because students are concerned that self-scheduled exams have not been implemented more this semester. Dean Rollins explained that the increase in laptop exams and the Bluebook option has been pushed ahead of time. Dean Rollins explained that the process of self-scheduled exams is going forward. She will provide an e-mail to answer students concerns raised today. Concern was raised that the self-scheduled exams are not truly self-schedule as students are only able to choose between two days, rather than whenever they want to schedule the exam. Paul noted Honor Council was positive for the law school community, because we are able to govern ourselves.
  • Pot Belly Brain Games, Trivia Fundraiser: April 19: Brian Wacker noted that there will be free beer, a band, and a night of fun. Tickets will be $25 per person for a whole night. There will be 35 teams of eight persons.
  • Fundraising: Lauren reminded students that the pre-order sales are being taken this week.
  • The next meeting will be, Thursday, March 6 at 5 p.m. in room 02. Dinner will be provided.
