What does Google Apps mean?

The entire SLU University is upgrading their email system by moving it all to the Google Apps platform. Your SLU email address will NOT change, but the way you access your email WILL change.

Once you have been migrated, instead of going to the old email server at mail.slu.edu, you will now login to the SLU Google server (see below for instructions). The most obvious benefit of this change is the larger mailbox space (roughly 600 times more space than before). SLU users should not have to worry about “disk quota full” messages anymore!

How do I access/connect to Google Apps?

Please be aware that this will not be available before June 18th, unless you are one of the early adopters.

  1. Go to http://mail.google.com/a/slu.edu
  2. You will be prompted for your Google Apps username and password:
  • Username: Your SLU email address without @slu.edu
  • Password: Initial password should be the last six digits of your Banner ID
  1. Once logged in, you can change your password by clicking on “Settings”, and choosing the “Accounts” tab.

What happens/How do I connect to my old mail?

When you have been migrated to Google mail (for most people, June 18), all of your NEW emails will be routed to the SLU Google server. All of your OLD emails will remain where they are now. You will be able to access these old emails in the same manner that you have before (Outlook, Thunderbird, etc).

Important: because the old email server will be taken offline on September 22nd, you will need to “upload” your old email into Google before that date. There are instructions for the upload process, or you can schedule a time for ITS help.

Will My Calendar transfer from Outlook or Gateway into Google?

From Outlook: There is currently no way to automatically transfer your Outlook Calendar into the Google Mail system.

From Gateway: Follow these steps to transfer your Gateway Calendar into your SLU Google Account

  1. Login to http://myslu.slu.edu
  2. Click on the “Calendar” icon near the top right
  3. Click “Options” at the top
  4. Click “Export” on the left
  5. Choose only ONE of the calendars you would like to migrate, and click “Add”
  6. Verify the correct calendar was selected, and the Export format is “iCal”
  7. Click “Export” at the bottom
  8. Click the “Save” button (Note: Google cannot import files larger than 1MB. If your file is too large, change the time frame. Typically a one year time-span is small enough.)
  9. Save the file to your desktop, and note the file name (“export.ics”)
  10. Login to your SLU Google Email account (http://mail.google.com/a/slu.edu)
  11. Click on the “Calendar” link at the top left
  12. Click on the down arrow next to “Add”, and select “Add Calendar”
  13. Click “Browse”
  14. Select the “export.ics” file you saved in step 9 (from the Desktop)
  15. Click on the “Import” button

How do I forward my new SLU email to another email account?

  1. Log in to your SLU Google mail account (Use http://mail.google.com/a/slu.edu/).
  2. Once you’re logged into your SLU Google mail account, click on “Settings”.
  3. Select the “Forwarding & POP/IMAP” tab.
  4. The top section allows you to enter the email address TO which you want your emails forwarded.
  5. Click “Save Changes” when you are finished.

None of my passwords work, and I can’t login.  What do I do?

  • If you are having trouble logging into Banner or myslu, contact the Law School ITS at 977-7283, or visit our Help Desk at the back of the computer lab, Morrissey Hall room 246.
  • If you are having trouble logging into Google Mail, contact Central ITS at 977-4000, or visit the Techinterns in Des Peres Hall. (If it is your first time logging in, remember to try the last six digits of your Banner ID as your password).

My question isn’t answered on this page.  Where else can I look?
